A friend of mine and her husband recently took their kids camping in the Rocky Mountains for 10 days. They had to keep their food in their van to protect it from the bears in the area. Half way through their stay, their cooler leaked in the back of the van and sat for the rest of their trip.
“We thought there was a forgotten sandwich under the chair or stinky feet at first… but we realized that the cooler had leaked and what we were smelling was not a dead body, but bacteria growing from the leaked water.” ~ Kara
They drove with their windows open as much as possible and Kara shared that they were a bit worried about the air quality in the van as well as their ability to actually remove the stink when they got home.
How Kara Cleaned Her Van…
Kara borrowed her friend’s carpet cleaner and added hot water and two scoops of Ultra Power Laundry Detergent and went to work cleaning the back of her van.

After two UPP treatments, Kara bought a bottle of Odour Eliminator, diluted it 1:7 with water and sprayed the van. To her surprise, in the morning, the van was perfectly odour free… well, as least as good as it gets with 4 kids in the back of a van.
I LOVE testimonials like this one, it is wonderful to hear about the power of using natural cleaning products that use soap and enzymes, instead of chemicals, to clean. Some people might believe that natural cleaners, like Norwex, are only good for the little cleaning jobs but when you have a ‘real mess’ you should pull out the heavy duty cleaners. A few more tips on how to clean up after camping:
Cooler lid: (the white ones that collect all the dirt): Use a diluted solution of Ultra Power Plus Laundry Detergent and water (1 scoop for a spray bottle) and spray the lid. Let sit for 5 minutes, then scrub with a Spirisponge and wipe clean with a damp EnviroCloth.
Camping Stove: A dap of Cleaning Paste with a Spirisponge and scrub the surface of the stove, wipe clean with a damp EnviroCloth.
Camper Surfaces: Wipe all the surfaces of your camper with a damp Envirocloth. If you find your camper has that ‘camping smell’ use a couple mists of Odour Eliminator (diluted 1:7 with water) in the camper to freshen it up for your next trip.

Let me remove the guessing game and give you the scoop on what cloth is best for what job. Let this post be your quick reference guide when you find yourself wondering if you are choosing the best cloth.
The Norwex Counter Cloths are so new that they are not on the comparison chart. But they are so fantastic, I wanted to include them in this post :).
Did you know that most of your Norwex cloths should NOT be used with soap?
Norwex microfiber cloths only require water to do their job effectively. The reason soap is not advised is because the microfiber is designed to absorb 7 times it’s weight (in water, dirt, debris, grease) but it will absorb soap as well. This happens because there are open spaces in the fibers created by the splitting process (during manufacturing) that enable the cloths to lift away dust and dirt and absorb several times its own weight. The absorbed soap will coat and clog the pores in the microfibers, making them ineffective and deep cleaning will be required to restore the cloth. But like most things in life, there are a few exceptions. These exceptions are designed to be used with or without dish soap (ideally Norwex Dishwashing Liquid). They include:
Norwex’s superior microfiber is guaranteed for 2 years of service. Norwex microfiber cloths work hard and have the ability to remove up to 99% of bacteria from a surface when following the proper care and use instructions. The microfiber is so ‘micro’ that if unwound, the fibers would stretch 3 million meters. After two years, they are no longer guaranteed as a chemical replacement. This doesn’t mean you should throw them away… it just means they should be demoted to jobs that don’t required 99% of bacteria removal. There are lots of jobs like that! For example: garage jobs, the outside windows, cleaning patio furniture, etc. I do suggest you replace the cloths you use to maintain your kitchen, bathroom, toilet, and any other cloths you use on surfaces that would normally require chemicals, every 2 years! That way it is guaranteed clean.
