How Clean is your Sink?

How Clean is your Sink?

What about the carrot sticks or lettuce leaves that tumble from the colander into the sink? Surely the sink, which is regularly doused with soap and water, must be cleaner than the floor, which is regularly defiled by the feet we use to stand at the sink — right?

“Wrong, wrong, 500 times wrong”, says Environmental Microbiologist Kelly Reynolds, Ph.D., an assistant professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona. While the floor may be crawling with 1,000 bacteria per square inch, the sink typically hosts around 500,000 bacteria per square inch — and she’s seen sinks that had millions more than that. “The sink is a ready source of bacteria just from washing off hands as well as food, which may carry fecal bacteria.” The number of bacteria it takes to make us sick depends on the type, but Reynolds says that it takes between 100 and 1,000 bacteria to transmit salmonella, which is the most frequently reported cause of foodborne illness.

Reynolds says our kitchen sinks are often dirtier than the toilets of public bathrooms, which may be regularly scrubbed with powerful disinfectants. “If you dropped something in the toilet at the gas station, would you rinse it off and eat it? Use the same mentality for your sink.”

Our kitchen sinks are where we wash everything from our hands, to doing the dishes, rinsing out your kitchen cloth, to washing veggies & fruit, to cleaning the thanksgiving turkey and even soaking your Norwex EnviroCloths to deep clean them.  The kitchen sink is a busy place.  As it is harvest time… some of our sinks will be especially busy.  Before you dump your beautiful harvest of carrots, potatoes, turnips, apples or cherries into your kitchen sink, consider how clean your sink really is and why it is important. DeloresVan.com

The World Health Organization (WHO) works with 150 countries to help them “ensure the highest attainable level of health for all people”.  They are committed to combatting disease as well as ensuring food, air & water safety.  They empower people to do their part in ensuring food safety in our homes…

So how do your keep your kitchen clean and safe?  Norwex’s Global Mission is improving quality of life by radically reducing chemicals in our homes.  Cleaning your kitchen sink properly and without chemicals is a simple way to improve our quality of life.

Seeing as the average kitchen sink can be 500 times dirtier than the average kitchen floor, let me give you a few Norwex tips on how to ensure your sink it really clean.  Did you know that Norwex not only provides clean solutions, but their solutions are time-saving, effective, chemical-free, environmentally friendly? That is awesome!

  1. Rinse your sink with hot water.
  2. Wet a Norwex Spirisponge and dab with Cleaning Paste.  Cleaning Paste has only 3 active natural ingredients (marble flour, natural soap, coconut oil). The Cleaning Paste will remove stains and bacteria, while leaving your sink shiny.
  3. In a circular motion, clean the entire sink from top to drain.  Spend a little extra time cleaning the ridges of your drain to remove any build up.
  4. Rinse with hot water.
  5. Wipe dry with flat-folded EnviroCloth.  EnviroCloths will remove unto 99% of bacteria from a surface when used properly.
  6. Repeat as needed.Step 1

This should take you no longer than 90 seconds from start to finish and the end result is a clean, food-safe sink!

Watch this:

I love Norwex’s quick, simple, affordable, effective and environmentally-friendly solutions for our day-to-day cleaning needs. With all the research revealing how dirty our sinks are and how it can negatively effect our health, Norwex offers a good solution!

Norwex Kitchen Cloth vs. EnviroCloth

Norwex Kitchen Cloth vs. EnviroCloth

Norwex has lots of great products!!! Some of them are similar and can create confusion about how to properly care for them and when to use them.  The Kitchen Cloth and EnviroCloth are two of awesome products that can often get confused.  This post is designed to remove any confusion and answer any questions you may have.

How are the Kitchen Cloth and the EnviroCloth the same?

  • Both cloths have the ability to remove up to 99% of bacteria from a surface when following proper care and use instructions.
  • Both cloths are woven from microfiber that is 1/200th the size of a human hair.
  • These tiny microfibers, that are woven together, pick up even the tiniest particles and trap them between the tiny microscopic spaces between the fibers.
  • Both cloths are embedded with micro silver called BacLock™ which is an antibacterial agent for self-purifying purposes only. The Baclock™ agent inhibits odors from bacteria, mold and mildew growth within the cloth.
  • I have sold Norwex since 2006, this is prior to the launch of both the Baclock™ agent and the Kitchen Cloths.  The Enviro cloth stood alone.  Back then, without Baclock™, the Enviro cloth certainly remove up to 99% of bacteria from a surface when following proper care and use instructions.  The incredible microfiber cleans the surface, the Baclock™ agent inhibits odors from bacteria, mold and mildew growth within the cloth.
  • Just by using water, surfaces will be streak-free, polished and shiny!
  • They both hold up to seven times its weight in liquid and grime.kitchen

How are the Kitchen Cloth and the EnviroCloth different?

The weight and density of the amount of woven fiber woven in these cloths is different.

  • One EnviroCloth has 10 million feet or 3 million meters of microfiber in one cloth.  If unravelled, one cloth would reach from Winnipeg, Canada into the Gulf of Mexico.  The EnviroCloth is woven tighter and is 35% more dense.
  • The Kitchen Cloth does not have the same amount of microfiber and is not woven as densely as the EnviroCloth.
    • As the weight of the EnviroCloth is heavier, it absorbs much more than a Kitchen Cloth.
    • As less fiber is woven into the Kitchen Cloth, the EnviroCloth can clean and pick up more particles… for a longer period of time and off a greater amount of surface area.
    • More Microfiber, means more fibers to pick up dirt, grease and moisture giving more cleaning power.
  • The EnviroCloth comes in 4 great colours, including: grey, red, blue & green.  The Kitchen Cloth is available in an assortment of 7 trendy colours, including: pomegranate, latte, sea mist, salmon, blue, graphite & orchid, plus they have matching Kitchen Towels to complement any home decor.
  • Some homeowners like to colour code their home with the tea towels, using one colour for drying hands and another complementary colour for drying dishes.
  • Use the Kitchen Cloth for light cleaning around your home.  Give your surfaces, including; stainless steel, enamel, ceramic, glass, chrome, granite, marble, quartz tile, wood and china, a streak-free polish with just a Kitchen Cloth!
  • For heavier cleaning, or as a chemical replacement around your home, I exclusively recommend the EnviroCloth!Screen Shot 2016-04-07 at 11.53.20 AM

Mistaken Identity:

  • Given the name, Kitchen Cloth, many homeowners assume this cloth is intended for washing their dishes in soapy water.  That is not the case.  For the best performance and care, I recommend you exclusively use it with water.  Unfortunately, if you regularly submerge the Kitchen Cloth in soapy water, the soap will coat the microfiber and micro silver Backlock™ agent embedded within the cloth, making it ineffective to inhibits odors from bacteria and your cloth may start to smell.  When customers reach out to me, because their cloths smell… this is over 90% of the problem.

How long are the cloths good for?

This has been the riddle I’ve said to my customers since 2006…

When you get a new cloth, write the date on the tag.  When the cloth is two years old, cut off the tag, the cloth is now a rag!

  • Norwex cloths can be reused around your home for up to 10 years. After two years, the EnviroCloth is still effective for detailing the inside of your vehicle, wiping your patio furniture and dusting around the home. But if you want to know for sure that the cloth is being used to its full capability as a chemical replacement and that it still has the ability to remove up to 99% of bacteria from a surface when following the proper care and use instructions, I recommend you use a cloth that is less than two years old.

Care Instruction:

  • Launder in the washing machine and dryer regularly.
  • Launder with lint-free laundry.
  • Avoid fabric softeners, bleach and other chemical cleaning products.
  • Wash in hot water.
  • For best results use scent-free laundry detergent.

Deep Cleaning Cloths:

  • Put all of your microfiber cloths in a sink or a large pot.
  • Sprinkle a scoop of Norwex UPP Ultra Plus Power Laundry Detergent over the cloths.
  • Pour boiling hot water over the product.
  • Stir a couple times and allow it to soak.
  • Repeat this process until your water stays clean after soaking.

How long does the micro silver last?

The micro silver is embedded into the cloth.  It can not be laundered out and it can not separate from the Microfiber.  Read this post:  How is Silver Embedded?

What can you all do with the Norwex Ultra Power Plus Laundry Detergent?

What can you all do with the Norwex Ultra Power Plus Laundry Detergent?

With over 9 years of educating others about the product… I  have heard a lot of testimonials!!  I lead an amazing team of consultants and collectively we share the amazing stories and testimonials about Norwex products from our consultants and customers.  As a team, we have heard all sorts of ways to use Norwex products that aren’t in the brochures, but are so valuable to help others find solutions to the cleaning challenges.  Today’s post is all about the Ultra Power Plus Laundry Detergent, affectionately known as UPP!  It’s name does not do the product justice as you will read… these testimonials I have collected attest to the superior ability of Norwex’s UPP!

Stainless Steel Appliances:

I did a presentation for a newly wed couple and they had picked up a free dishwasher off Kijiji.  The lady giving it away couldn’t stand the smudges and smear marks all over the stainless steal surface.  My host was beyond delighted when I simply removed all the buildup and oil film off the appliance with ease.   At another party, my host had a very high end, triple wide stainless steal range hood. From the date of installation, there was a oily film across the centre of this beautiful kitchen centre piece.  Both my host and her husband were thrilled I was able to remove it!

“I was at a party where I made a solution of UPP with water, dipped my wet EnviroCloth into the solution and amazingly it took off 6 years of water stain drips on the hosts dishwasher that she could not remove. She gave me the biggest hug!!”  ~Deenie Gross

“My past hostess used diluted UPP and an EnviroCloth to remove 4 years worth of stainless steel cleaner residue from her fridge!” ~Stephanie Jones

Clothes Stains:

Do you have any shirts with pit staining?  Well, this is an amazing solution!!  Simply create a mixture of UPP with water and apply to the affected area.  Run it through the washing machine and it will shock you!!  I have a young 20-year-old customer, who attended 6 shows in 8 months.  She fell in love with everything!!  At one presentation she was wearing a cute top, only to lift up her arm and share that the pit stains she had on this favorite shirt, which she had hid under jackets and throws, were totally gone!!

“My daughter’s white dress have a chocolate stain that was from July!!! I made a paste with the UPP and it let it sit overnight. Completely got rid of it!” ~ Natasha Sandoval

“Cleaned coffee that was spilled on my brand new shirt. Dipped it in the water mixed with UPP and it came right out!!”  ~ Kathryn Debree

Furniture Stains:
“Dilute the UPP in water in a spray bottle and clean microfiber furniture. Works amazing.” ~ Jessica Aten

Norwex Microfiber Cloths:

“I tried the ‘deep clean’ where you fill a wash basin tub with boiling water, add a scoop of UPP, add a pile of Norwex EnviroCloths and let soak. Whoa, I was shocked at how much came out of my microfiber! Some cloths I added were clean, right from the drawer. BEST way to revitalize older cloths, for sure!”  ~ Kathy-Sue Dyrland

Summer

From: Summer Shessel

“This is a gross picture of my Travel EnviroCloth. I didn’t have time to boil it so I just put the kettle on and then filled a small bowl with the boiling water a 1/2 tsp of UPP, dropped in the cloth and put a lid on it. Came back a an hour or so later after running errands and this is what the water looked like. Gross! My cloth is so clean now… like new.” ~ Summer Shessel

Jewelry Cleaner:

“Ladies cleaned their rings at a party. Simply, diluted UPP, soak for a few moments, use a toothbrush. (Norwex or another one, I do not use the Norwex toothbrush here, because I talk about saving the best toothbrush for your teeth)”  ~ Jenilee Garnish

Oven Racks:

“I have spent 40 years cleaning my oven and never been able to get my oven racks completely clean, especially without half a day of scrubbing. I put the racks in the tub with a teaspoon of UPP and voila, shiny, clean and just like new! Used the Spirinett with no effort to take off the really bad spots. Love it!” ~ Cathie Luxon-Hines

Sheets:

“Takes the oils out of my massage sheets! And of course my scrubs for massage!” ~ Jessie Brooke

jordana“I think I’ve shared this before but it applies…My daughter covered my beige comforter in a full tube of red lipstick! I made a paste with the UPP and the Stain Remover and brushed it in with a nail brush, then I washed it in the washing machine. I had small flecks left so I repeated and viola!”  ~ Jordana Fast

Flip Flops & Shower Curtains:

The UPP is certainly an extremely versatile product. Here are a couple of my favourites which haven’t been mentioned: 1) Cleaning my Flip Flop sandals. These are the most comfortable footwear with great bling – but the base has texture which collects dust. Nothing cleans them faster then an EnviroCloth dipped in diluted UPP!! They look like NEW in seconds!! 2) I’ll fill our largest juice container with water and diluted UPP, set it on the edge or our tub and soak the shower curtain! Works AMAZING!!

Carpets:

My sister has a white area rug in her home and she added some UPP to the carpet cleaning machine, and it made the area rug look like new!!

“I put the UPP in my carpet steam vac and cleaned my microfiber couch.”  ~ Tina Whitman-Neubecker

UPP is so versatile and effective… I hope you were inspired by the testimonials and success stories I shared. Check back soon for more testimonials about other fabulous Norwex products. If you had success using UPP, please comment below.

Plastic Grocery Bags & Disposable Wipes Hurt the Environment

Plastic Grocery Bags & Disposable Wipes Hurt the Environment

Let me tell you about a few alternative products that will reduce your exposure to chemicals and will help you save the environment.

The first product is a Reusable Grocery Bag with BacLock™ (only $6.99).  Sounds like that has been done before, right?  Not quite, Norwex’s Reusable Grocery Bag does not harbour bacteria.  It makes sense, right?  When you reuse an item, it tends to get dirty and with that dirty comes bacteria that can harm us.  The Norwex Grocery Bag is handy like most other reusable bags, it is a generous size, it is light weight, it is hefty and strong and it is constructed with recycled materials. But how it isn’t like every other reusable bag is that it is constructed out of food-grade materials and has a BacLock™ lining designed to inhibit odors from bacteria, mold and mildew growth on the inside of the bag.  When your Norwex Reusable Grocery Bag does get dirty, simply wipe it down with a well-wrung, flat-folded EnviroCloth and you will be good to go.

Hooray!  That sounds like a perfect bag to bring groceries home in!

This video was filmed more than 2,000 miles from the nearest continent.  Midway Island North Pacific Ocean.

Two of my favorite quotes are:

  • “Be the change you want to see in the world.”  Mahatma Gandhi
  • “What we do to nature, we are doing to ourselves.”  David Suzuki

The second product is the Reusable Wet Wipes Bag.  Such a great NEW idea that works together with the Norwex Travel Pack EnviroCloths.  The Reusable Wet Wipes Bag is waterproof and has two pockets, the front for unused wet/dry clothes and a back pocket for used clothes.  It is small enough to tuck in your purse, diaper bag or backpack. It is made from 100% cotton and is machine-washable.  It is perfect to hold travel size clothes that we need for dirty hands and faces, dirty bums, sticky spots in your car, spot washing your shirt and anything else on the go.

How handy!

It may seem like a daunting task to give up baby wipes for good… but let me share a tried and true recipe for homemade wipes.  These can be used for those messy jobs that require a disposable wipe. Back in 1999, when our oldest was born I was given this recipe and I used it exclusively for all three of our girls.  I was introduced to Norwex once I was almost out of the diaper stage of life.  That said, I do recommend using the Norwex Baby Body Pack for cleaning baby delicate skin in the bath, to wiping sensitive bottoms, to cleaning babies teething gums.  They work remarkable!!

Well-Used Ovens and BBQs need some Love?

Well-Used Ovens and BBQs need some Love?

Recently my family hosted a delicious lasagne dinner for our extended family. It was a full house — with approximately 40 people in attendance. We needed a lot of lasagne that night! We baked a few in the oven and a few (my husband’s brilliant idea) in the barbecue. Not only did we cook a lot of lasagne that night, we made a lot of mess in both my oven and barbecue!  The lasagne exploded all over the place!!!  Lucky for me, Norwex makes a great Oven and Grill Cleaner.

Here are pictures of my personal oven … Before & After.

Cleaning Oven Collage

I did included step-by-step cleaning instructions in an earlier Spring Clean post… but thought that if you have a busy family or a lasagne party, or are hosting Thanksgiving dinner and need to clean up the bottom of your oven before cooking the turkey, or you were ready to put the barbecue away for the winter season, this enzyme-based cleaner will make your oven/barbecue clean and look brand new!

Did you know that the “self-cleaning” cycle in your oven releases toxic lingering fumes in our homes making it an unhealthy for our families and especially our small children and small pets?

Here’s a little ‘how-to’ refresher:

Cleaning Racks CollageCleaning the oven used to be an enormous task but with Oven and Grill cleaner, simply turn the oven on to 175°, once it is preheated turn the oven off. Spray the Oven and Grill solution on the racks, walls, base, door  and glass window. Let the solution sit for 10 minutes. Wipe it clean with a Spirinett and then an EnviroCloth.  These targeted enzyme breaks down any burnt food or residue in your oven or on your racks and turns it into a black liquid which is easy to wipe clean. Never before has cleaning your oven been so simple or toxic free!

What shocks me every time, is how my Norwex EnviroCloth rinses clean after wiping up these significant messes!!

Cleaning your barbecue is also made simple with Norwex Oven and Grill Cleaner. First roll your barbecue on to a tarp to catch any drips from the cleaning solution and black char from your barbecue. It would be awful for the cleaning process to damage your deck boards. Next, preheat your barbecue to approximately 175°. Turn the barbecue off. Then, spray the Oven and Grill cleaner on the racks. Wait for approximately 10 minutes, when you return, wipe down the rack with a Spirinett and then with an EnviroCloth. The EnviroCloth will also do beautiful job of cleaning/polishing the stainless steel exterior of your barbecue.

So if you missed the cleaning fever in the Spring or your summer has been filled with hosting backyard barbecues or lasagna has been exploding in your oven, Norwex has a safe and easy solution… again.
